Why do some users view Discord Nitro negatively despite its benefits?

I’ve been looking into Discord Nitro and noticed there’s a lot of criticism around it in the community. From what I see, it offers several perks, like supporting an ad-free platform, boosting servers, and cosmetic features like profile customization.

It also helps Discord stay independent without selling user data to advertisers.

Still, some users argue that it’s not worth paying for features that are mostly cosmetic or available for free on other platforms.

Personally, I feel the benefits justify the cost, but I’m curious, why is there such a strong negative sentiment around Nitro? What are the deeper reasons behind the pushback?

I’ve been using Discord since the early days, and from what I’ve seen, a lot of the negativity around Nitro comes from how little it offers for everyday users. If you’re not managing servers or sharing huge files, you basically get some emojis, profile banners, and a badge.

I subscribed to Nitro for a few months but ended up canceling - not because it’s bad, but because the price didn’t match what I actually used.

Casual users don’t care about 4K streaming or extra emojis. So it feels like you’re paying for vanity, which can rub people the wrong way when platforms like Telegram or Slack offer rich features for free.

I think the biggest frustration people have (myself included at one point) is that Nitro doesn’t unlock any meaningful new functionality in the app. No priority support, no special moderation tools, no enhancements to actual communication flow - just aesthetic upgrades.

A lot of us hoped Nitro would come with perks like reliable voice quality in large servers, better moderation options, or advanced search tools. Instead, you get custom tags and banners.

It feels like Discord missed a chance to reward power users in a way that improves their day-to-day usage, not just how their profile looks. That’s why some of the criticism comes off as harsh - expectations weren’t met.
