What is Eclipse and JDK?

Eclipse and JDK are the most widely used Java Development Environment. They are both open source and free to use. Eclipse is an IDE (Integrated Development Environment) that can be used to develop applications in Java, C,C++, PHP and many other programming languages. It was initially developed by IBM in 2001. Open source projects can also be built using this environment. It is written in Java and hence, it is platform independent.

Java Development Kit (JDK) is a software development kit used for developing java applications, applets and API (Application Programming Interface). It includes an integrated development environment as well as a set of libraries. The most important part of JDK is the bytecode verifier which checks the bytecode produced by the compiler/interpreter to ensure that they do not contain any errors.

JDK is a standard component of all operating systems based on Unix or Linux operating systems while Eclipse can be downloaded from their website www.eclipse.org or by typing “eclipse” in the search field on your favorite browser’s toolbar.
