I just discovered how easy it is to run PS1, N64, and SNES emulators on a Chromebook and now I’m hooked. It works great with a basic controller and feels like unlocking a full gaming machine.
For those of you into retro gaming, what are your go-to emulators on Chromebook, and do you have any tips for performance or game compatibility?
I use RetroArch installed via Linux on my Chromebook, it’s a fantastic all-in-one emulator.
With cores for SNES (bsnes, Snes9x), PS1 (Beetle PSX), and N64 (Mupen64Plus), it’s super flexible. I also recommend enabling GPU acceleration in your Linux settings, it made a big difference for PS1 and N64 titles.
Also, don’t forget to turn on threaded video in RetroArch settings if you’re running into performance hiccups.
Same here, Retro gaming totally changed how I use my Chromebook. I’ve had good results using DuckStation (for PS1) and m64p (for N64) through the Linux container. DuckStation especially runs silky smooth with enhanced visuals.
I connect an Xbox controller via Bluetooth, and it works flawlessly with most emulators. Just make sure you give the Linux container enough storage and CPU in your Chromebook’s settings. That helped me run games without audio lag.
